Who are Refugees?

A refugee is a person outside of his or her country of nationality who, owing to persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion, is unable to or, owing to such fear, unwilling to return home.

Figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimate refugee numbers currently exceed 14 million with an estimated 80 percent comprised of women and children.
