Become a Volunteer!

Volunteers are an invaluable element of the Institute. There are many ways you or your group can help support us by giving your time and talents. Below are brief descriptions of the volunteer positions in our various programs and departments.
Note that we take great care in matching volunteer skills with the Institute’s needs. We will ask for your resume, and that you come in for an orientation. Both you and the relevant staff member can determine if it’s a good fit. If you find a volunteer position that sounds right for you and you would like more information, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator or the appropriate program director.

IICONN is currently seeking the following Volunteers:

DATA MANAGEMENT INTERN: This position will be responsible for developing a Master Client Database to support IICONN’s marketing and communication programming

RESOURCE DATABASE MANAGEMENT INTERN: This position will be responsible for the care and uptake of IICONN’s inter-agency Resource Database.

REFUGEE SERVICES CASE AIDE: Work with the various refugee programs to assist in providing direct service to newly arrived families in Bridgeport

SURVIVORS OF TORTURE SERVICES CASE AIDE: Support the work to help individuals who have experienced trauma and been victims of torture as they start their lives again in Bridgeport

PROJECT RESCUE CASE AIDE: Help to address the needs of individuals who have been illegally trafficked and unaccompanied minors throughout Connecticut

Ongoing volunteer opportunities include:

REFUGEE MENTOR: Show refugee clients around their new communities. Activities can include helping clients become familiar with public transportation, taking them to the library or museums, and going to restaurants. Must make a 6 month commitment and meet 2-3 times per month.

INTERPRETER: Become a member of our volunteer interpreter bank. Language needs include (but are not limited to) French, Spanish, Portuguese, Creole, Khmer, Arabic, Farsi, Thai, Russian, and many other languages. The Institute offers periodic training in this area which result in a certificate. Must speak English fluently; some interpreting experience preferred.

DONATIONS COORDINATOR: Help manage the donations of furniture and other household goods destined for our arriving refugee families.

PRO BONO COUNSELOR: Conduct group or one-on-one counseling sessions for trauma victims from our refugee, human trafficking, and other victim services programs. Clinical background required. For more information please contact Ellen Messali or at 203-336-0141

LEGAL ASSISTANT: Support immigration staff members as they help clients adjust their immigration status, file for citizenship, and secure employment authorization, among other legal matters.(Hartford and Stamford)

EMPLOYMENT ASSISTANT: Call employers and find businesses in the area to search for job opportunities for clients. Assist clients with resume writing and applying for jobs online.

ENGLISH TUTOR: Work with English language learners as an assistant in ESL classes or tutor clients one-on-one.

SPECIAL EVENTS COORDINATOR: Participate in planning and executing special events.

OFFICE ASSISTANT: Support various departments with filing, data entry, and other clerical duties.

DRIVER: Pick up and drop off in-kind donations.

UNIVERSITY INTERNS: IICONN welcomes university interns from various majors and disciplines. Most of our students receive college credit, although some do not.

PRO BONO ATTORNEYS: Serve as a consultant or mentor to partially accredited representatives, or participate in our court representation project by representing low income individuals in cases involving cancellation of removal, asylum, adjustment of status, convention against torture, and deportation.)
